francisco congratulations everybody for being a hero today. you know the san francisco hospital foundation the general hospital foundation has been such a wonderful wonderful entity and i want to just thank stephanie your leadership, i want to thank julie and rich at the board with all of the other board members, the staff at the hospital, all of the staph, you know sometimes the doctors have to do it's emergency work but what makes that whole hospital run is literally everybody that works at the hospital from the social workers to the accountants to the administrators to the nurses, and nurse practitioner and is the doctors and all of the fundraisers thank you everybody for working together. and for today, again, a big thanks to ellen and pam for your leadership and bringing the hearts and the heros together. it's such a wonderful just community effort to support our general hospital and all of the work that it does. everybody knows what it does already. but i also want to say there are other heros that you are acknowledging today and i would like to just give them a word of t
a chance to meet with all of our san francisco chancellor and is i see chancellor here today from -- state and he joined me with chancellor helm man from uc s f city college our own public schools superintendentent to form a major education leadership counsel to advise me in making sure that the skill sets that we need in the jobs in the future are being trained and reflected in the education curriculum and how to support not only the institutions, but all of the different programs that we can use to lift up all of the educational stands for our youth i have person learn adopted 12 middle schools in san francisco to make sure each principal gets what they need to campus to support teachers effort on campus to raise the educational needs of the schools. middle school is the biggest challenge with truancy and educational challenges and we know that while we are increasing the performance stand of the whole cities one of the highest increases in the whole state is happening here in the public schools in san francisco they are to the satisfied with just a bump we need to taken it at the highe

[ applause ] growing in the area, his accomplishments and contributions to the world at large and public service were not lost on me and it is really been a dream come true for me to grow up and get to know him professionally and personally. my father and willie were acquaintances and fraternity brothers. >> when he was elected the first african american mayor i was right up there front and center in 1996 an
opposing these cuts. i think san francisco should be proud of its legacy among big cities working to eliminate these job ghettos as they're called sometimes where women and people of color are paid 20 to 40% less on average of men doing the same work and we are urging you to refuse the pay rate reductions. i brought a letter from our board of directors and stand with workers from san francisco. thank you. >> thank you very much. next speaker please. i have a few names i could call. together and so we have summer jobs and internship that we can take here in san francisco for young people in the parts of oakland and young african american that are still dropping out before they finish high school and i think if they get a job or an intern ship in the summer they are less likely to drop out and so that is what i'm ep ending with and oakland is a city of hope that we need help and that is what we need do is support the american dream by making sure that everybody in the city rises and so thank you very much and we look forward -- [inaudible/incomprehensible] >>> my admiration and love and understanding of what the culture is experience i have been here for 50 years, our 50 is one of the greatest cities to ever rise up and stand up if you meet people from oakland, they are some of the warmest people they carry hope, they use fire they -- oakland is a hub of creativity we are who we are we are political, we are artsy, we are musicians for the entrepreneur oakland is the fantastic place to be your base you can relax absorb the culture and create. and you can look for us
% more? we work in san francisco general hospital. it's a level one trauma center. i invite you to come. i will exchange job with you for one week to see what you do for you guys, for the citizens of san francisco. there are a lot of people that lost their job they come over there. there are a lot of people they get into traditional accidents we take care of them. >> >> i hope you're not one of them or your family but when you come you're opening a brand-new hospital. how are you going to employ that hospital with the way you're going? this is not going to work. people are leaving. we can't retain people. this is not pushing paper. we are dealing with people's lives there. when people come with gunshot wounds, stab wounds, horrible car accidents and we save lives everyday. we don't sit behind desks. we deal with people's lives and for you to say that we are making more money than we're supposed to. i don't think that is right. you compare us to other people that they are living in counties over 100,000. we live in san francisco. we work over here and we work for th
everywhere in san francisco and san jose and quite frankly and i'm being very honestly about this because of what the president said the other night we are for the not going to end -- unless we get the universal background check on gunses because california and oakland have some of the strongest laws in the country but the guns come in across nevada evidence and we need all of your help to support the president on this. because if you care about the violence in america cities, we have to have -- it's a no-brainer if it's legal for a teenager to have a machine begun in the streets of urban america and that is leading to this higher murder rate across the country it makes a difference. so, if you need to we need you to help support the president on that and you can do that and my organization is to -- to help the obama administration we can bring down violate crime permanently if we also refer to the issues of giving opportunity to young people and hope. and oakland more than other cities we have more people that have been left out of the america dream and as president obama said the oth
young people here in the city and county of san francisco. i got to know you when i was at the board [speaker not understood] and got to continue working with you on the board of supervisors. ~ board of education i want to say someone who was a youth organizer for many years, it's often hard to get young people at the table around policy discussions for numerous reasons. a, we a policy makers are not aware of the needs of our young people. and b, it's really hard to get young people into city hall and understand often our very complicated processes, legislation, and understand the best way to give input. but the balance of figuring out just how to empower young people but also guide and mentor and train young people is a delicate balance to have. but it's great it see how beautifully you do that over the last three years. and both how young people respect and love you, also how you are able to raise young leaders here in the city of san francisco. and your work will continue on. that's one of the best parts of working with young people is that you get to watch them continue to grow a

the lives of children and families in san francisco for over three decades. she will have an opportunity to speak in a minute, but she will not say much about herself, so, let me give you a glimpse of her dedication serving some of san francisco's most vulnerable children and families from the time i met her in early 1980s helping southeast asian refugees in the tenderloin reset l themselves from war torn countries to a current organization that helps homeless families with small children to get back on their feet. ~ it is a true testament to her work and her dedication that she has created such a great and high-quality program that can serve not only homeless families, but families from all special economic levels, a feat not easily accomplished in san francisco. a little more about donna. after she earned her b.s. degree in elementary education from the university of pittsburgh and after teaching children through the seta program, donna really came to san francisco. on her arrival, she discovered proposition 13 resulted in the layoff of hundreds of bay area teachers and having been ins

(applause) >> good morning. i am incredibly excited to be here today for a couple of reasons. first of all, the hatchery is one of my favorite places in the city. there is truly a bee hive of activity of the newest innovations that san francisco will be famous for. i also love the fact that just a couple of blocks from here is where our san francisco giants are moving on to the world series. but just in this room, all of you are giants and making sure that san francisco is the world cha
more surprised than i wanted to be about how far behind san francisco government was. this was very 2008, 2009. with you i'm really proud of the leaps and bounds we have taken as a city * . i was proud in 2010 to help move forward legislation to really bring together city departments to work in a coordinated way with our committee on information technology. to help create a chief information officer position for the city. i was also proud to work with then mayor newsome in passing the first generation of open data legislation that we have. but as our civil grand jury in june pointed out, our i-t in san francisco is still in need of a culture shock. and this is where all of us come in today. we have 200 data sets that have already been put out there, but by and large the data sets put out by city government are data sets that i think show us in a very positive way. from my perspective, it's important for us to keep on pushing data sets that allow us to deal with the sometimes imperfections in city government. to figure it out, where it is we need to take risks, we are we can be more
of health care in san francisco, and as i said earlier today, i very much appreciate everyone who is part of the negotiating operating room that resuscitated this critical project. and i also want to echo the thanks that have already been described. there are so many folks that we need to give credit to moving us to where we are today, starting first and foremost with the tremendous community coalition that has been working for many years across so many different policy and community areas. i, of course, also want to start by thanking our mediator lou jirardo who was tremendous and this project would not be where it is today without his leadership. clearly there was also tremendous leadership within the city. we need to single out ken rich for the millions of hours that he spent working on this as well as with many department heads and, of course, our mayor. and then i want to take a moment and just thank supervisors campos and farrell. i know that campos, farrell, chiu are three supervisorial names not discussed together in a sentence but each of our colleagues plate a critical and equal
